CASCARA COFFEE CHERRY | Herbal Tisanes
Cascara, which means “husk” or “peel” in Spanish, is the dried skin of a coffee cherry. Although it comes from the coffee plant, the drink doesn’t taste anything like it.
Cascara is often described as having a sweet, fruity taste, with bright cranberry acidity, & notes of rose hip, hibiscus, cherry, red currant, or even tobacco. It does not have the same caffeine content as coffee.
Once considered to be just a byproduct of the coffee drying process with little commercial value & often discarded, early innovators now upcycle cascara into a variety of beverages- most notably tea, while some use it for kombucha, cider, or even beer.
From a sustainability perspective, we love that we can buy yet another product from the producers & give them one more source of income for a product they already have naturally at the farms.
BREWING GUIDE:
Duration: 8-10 minutes
Temperature: 100C° (full boil)
Amount: 2.5g or 1 tbsp per cup
BREWING RECOMMENDATIONS:
- If you like your tisane brewed stronger or weaker, adjust the amount of leaves
- Brewing your tisane too long can extract an undesirable bitterness from the leaves
- Tisanes can typically be steeped multiple times. However, each steeping will yield a slightly lighter flavor than the previous.
- To brew in a large teapot, increase the amount of loose leaf to match the total cups of water you’re using.
